TOEFL iBT — the short version
The TOEFL iBT was substantially redesigned in January 2026. The test now runs to roughly an hour and a half in total, with four sections — Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking — and Reading and Listening delivered as multistage adaptive modules, so performance on the first module determines the difficulty of the second. Task types changed too, adding items such as Complete the Words, Build a Sentence, Listen and Repeat and a short interview. Scores are now reported as bands from 1.0 to 6.0 in half-point steps for each section, with the overall band the average of the four. Preparation material written for the older 0–120 test is misleading on format, pacing and scoring. Tabish Tutors prepares candidates for the current test.

Diagnosis first
TOEFL marks slip for a small number of fixable reasons
We find which one it is in the first session, then teach against it. Vague effort does not move a score; a named cause does.
Preparing for the old test
Most TOEFL material still describes a two-hour, 0–120 test with different task types. Candidates using it arrive expecting the wrong exam, and pacing is the first thing to fall apart.
Module 1 treated as a warm-up
Reading and Listening are adaptive. A slow start caps the difficulty of the second module and with it the achievable band. There is no easing in.
Speaking is under-practised because it is short
Eight minutes of speaking is easy to dismiss and carries a full quarter of the overall band. It also punishes hesitation more than the old format did.
Grammar precision ignored
Build a Sentence rewards exact structural control rather than fluency. It is highly trainable and almost nobody trains it.
The plan
How the course actually runs
A written plan agreed before the first paid lesson, so you always know what stage the student is in.
Format Reset
Week 1
- Establish what the candidate believes the test is
- Correct the format if they prepared on old material
- Baseline across all four sections
- Set the target band per section
Section Build
Weeks 2–5
- Teaching for the weakest section first
- New task types drilled individually
- Vocabulary in context rather than lists
- Grammar precision for Build a Sentence
Adaptive Strategy
Weeks 6–8
- Why Module 1 accuracy decides the ceiling
- Pacing when you cannot return to earlier items
- Speaking under a short, unforgiving clock
- Stamina across a compressed test
Full Mocks
Final phase
- Full-length practice in one sitting
- Band tracking per section
- Registration and ID guidance
- Honest readiness decision before booking
How it works
From first message to first lesson
Four steps, no directory to sort through, no commitment before the demo.
Tell us about the student
Curriculum, board, current grade, target grade, and the topics actually causing trouble. Two minutes on WhatsApp is usually enough.
We match the tutor
We hand-pick one specialist for your exact specification. You are not sent a directory to sort through — the match is our job.
Free trial lesson
A real teaching session with the tutor who would teach the course. No payment, no card details, no commitment.
Lessons and weekly reports
The same tutor every week, a written plan, and a progress report to the parent so nobody is guessing whether it is working.
Who teaches it
Faculty for TOEFL iBT
You are matched to one of these specialists — and you keep them.
Every enquiry reaches the academic team first. They read what the student is actually stuck on, identify the exact board and paper, and match a subject specialist who teaches that syllabus week in and week out — not the next tutor on a list. The team sets the study plan, reviews progress reports before they are sent, and steps in to reassign a tutor if the match is not right after the first lesson. They also answer the WhatsApp line during teaching hours.
Questions parents ask
TOEFL — frequently asked questions
Each section is reported as a band from 1.0 to 6.0 in half-point steps, and the overall band is the average of the four, rounded to the nearest half point. The old 0–30 per section and 0–120 total no longer apply. Check what your university requires, as institutions updated their thresholds at different times.
Most universities accept both. TOEFL is now shorter and fully computer-delivered with an adaptive structure; IELTS is longer, includes a face-to-face style speaking interview and reports on the familiar 0–9 band scale. We baseline you on both before you commit if you are undecided.
Eight to twelve weeks is typical for a meaningful gain. Candidates already close to target and only needing format familiarity can be ready faster.
The published specification puts total test time at roughly one hour and 25 minutes including the adaptive routing sections. It is markedly shorter than the previous format, which changes pacing strategy completely.
