SQA — Scottish Qualifications — the short version
SQA, the Scottish Qualifications Authority, awards the qualifications used in Scottish secondary education. The main progression runs National 5, usually taken around age 15 to 16, then Higher, the principal qualification for university entry in Scotland, and then Advanced Higher, which bridges into first-year university study. Courses are graded A to D with a No Award category, and many include an assignment or project component alongside the question papers. Tabish Tutors teaches SQA one-to-one online against the published course specifications, with past papers marked to SQA marking instructions.

Diagnosis first
SQA marks slip for a small number of fixable reasons
We find which one it is in the first session, then teach against it. Vague effort does not move a score; a named cause does.
The National 5 to Higher jump
Higher demands substantially more abstraction and speed than National 5. Students who coasted at N5 often meet their first real difficulty in the Higher prelim, when there is still time to fix it.
The assignment is left late
Assignments and projects carry real marks and have fixed windows. Rushed ones lose marks that were freely available.
Marking instructions never read
SQA publishes exactly how marks are awarded. Students who have never read them guess at what an answer needs.
Non-calculator fluency has faded
Where a paper is non-calculator, arithmetic speed becomes a grade factor. It decays quickly and rebuilds fast with drilling.

Higher is normally a one-year course taken around age 16 to 17 and is the standard route into Scottish universities; Advanced Higher then sits close to first-year undergraduate level. A Levels run over two years. Universities outside Scotland usually ask for Advanced Highers or additional Highers.
