OCR — the short version
OCR (Oxford, Cambridge and RSA) is one of the main England-based awarding bodies for GCSEs and A Levels. Its science qualifications come in two distinct routes — Gateway, which is organised by discipline, and Twenty First Century Science, which is organised around scientific ideas and their applications — and its mathematics is offered both as OCR A and as OCR B (MEI). OCR is also widely used for Computer Science, where the programming project carries significant weight. Because those routes differ substantially, teaching that is not matched to the exact one wastes effort. Tabish Tutors teaches OCR one-to-one online against the specific specification, with OCR past papers marked to OCR schemes.
What we cover
Full OCR coverage — nothing quietly skipped
We teach to the specification, not to a summary of it. Here is exactly what is on the table.
Sciences
- Gateway Science (Route A) — Biology, Chemistry, Physics
- Twenty First Century Science (Route B) — ideas-led structure
- Combined Science and separate Sciences
- Practical Activity Groups and the practical endorsement
Mathematics
- OCR A Mathematics — Pure, Mechanics, Statistics
- OCR B (MEI) — modelling-led approach
- Further Mathematics options
- Large data set and calculator technique
Computer Science
- Computer systems — architecture, networks, security
- Algorithms and computational thinking
- Programming techniques and data structures
- The programming project — design, develop, test, evaluate
Business & Humanities
- Business and Economics case-study technique
- History source and interpretation questions
- Geography fieldwork and skills
- Extended-response structures
Who this is for
Is OCR tutoring right for your student?
- Students entered for OCR Gateway or Twenty First Century Science
- MEI Mathematics and Further Mathematics students
- OCR Computer Science students facing the programming project
- Students whose revision material is aimed at a different board
- A Level Biology, Chemistry and Physics students on OCR specs
What you get
Outcomes we commit to
- Teaching matched to your exact OCR route and specification
- The Computer Science project supervised stage by stage
- Practical Activity Groups covered as examinable content
- OCR past papers marked to OCR mark schemes
Diagnosis first
OCR marks slip for a small number of fixable reasons
We find which one it is in the first session, then teach against it. Vague effort does not move a score; a named cause does.
The wrong science route is being revised
Gateway and Twenty First Century organise the same discipline completely differently. Using the wrong route's revision guide is one of the most damaging and least noticed OCR mistakes.
MEI is being taught like OCR A
MEI leads with modelling and interpretation. Students drilled only on procedure meet questions that ask them to justify a model and freeze.
The programming project drifts
OCR Computer Science projects lose marks on documentation, testing and evaluation rather than on code. Those are the stages students rush.
Practical Activity Groups skipped
OCR examines practical skills through its Practical Activity Groups. Where school time runs short, these are dropped first and examined anyway.
The plan
How the course actually runs
A written plan agreed before the first paid lesson, so you always know what stage the student is in.
Route Confirmation
Session 1
- Confirm Gateway or Twenty First Century, OCR A or MEI
- Confirm specification code and tier
- Baseline on a genuine OCR paper
- Map school coverage against the specification
Content
Core teaching
- Full coverage in the route's own structure
- Practical Activity Groups taught explicitly
- MEI modelling approach where relevant
- Topic tests marked to OCR schemes
Project & Technique
Skill build
- Computer Science project supervised through each stage
- Extended-response structures for OCR papers
- Data, graph and calculation question method
- Timing against real OCR papers
Papers
Final phase
- Full OCR past papers to timing
- Tutor-marked with written feedback
- Error log by question type
- Grade tracking to the exam series
How it works
From first message to first lesson
Four steps, no directory to sort through, no commitment before the demo.
Tell us about the student
Curriculum, board, current grade, target grade, and the topics actually causing trouble. Two minutes on WhatsApp is usually enough.
We match the tutor
We hand-pick one specialist for your exact specification. You are not sent a directory to sort through — the match is our job.
Free trial lesson
A real teaching session with the tutor who would teach the course. No payment, no card details, no commitment.
Lessons and weekly reports
The same tutor every week, a written plan, and a progress report to the parent so nobody is guessing whether it is working.
Questions parents ask
OCR — frequently asked questions
The specification code on the exam timetable or textbook tells you, and we confirm it in the first session. Getting this wrong wastes months, so we never assume.
Yes, including the modelling-led approach and the interpretation questions that distinguish MEI from OCR A.
Yes — through design, development, testing and evaluation, within the rules on what a supervisor may advise. The code stays the student's own work.
