Combined & Co-ordinated Sciences — the short version
Combined Science covers Biology, Chemistry and Physics in a single course that awards two grades rather than three, and is the route most students take at GCSE and IGCSE. At GCSE it appears as AQA Trilogy or Synergy and equivalents from other boards; at IGCSE, Cambridge offers Combined Science (single award) and Co-ordinated Sciences (double award). The content is reduced relative to the separate sciences but spans all three disciplines, so a single weak discipline drags both grades down. Tabish Tutors teaches the whole course one-to-one online, including the required practicals, with past papers marked to the mark scheme.
What we cover
Full Combined Sciences coverage — nothing quietly skipped
We teach to the specification, not to a summary of it. Here is exactly what is on the table.
Biology
- Cell biology, transport and cell division
- Organisation, digestion, circulation and disease
- Bioenergetics — photosynthesis and respiration
- Homeostasis, hormones and the nervous system
- Inheritance, variation, evolution and ecology
Chemistry
- Atomic structure and the periodic table
- Bonding, structure and the properties of matter
- Quantitative chemistry and calculations
- Chemical changes, energy changes and rates
- Organic basics, analysis and the atmosphere
Physics
- Energy stores, transfers and efficiency
- Electricity — circuits, resistance, mains supply
- Particle model and matter
- Atomic structure and radioactivity
- Forces, motion, waves and magnetism
Practical & Skills
- The required practicals and how they are examined
- Variables, validity, repeatability and error
- Graph drawing, gradients and interpretation
- Formula and equation recall under time
Who this is for
Is Combined Sciences tutoring right for your student?
- Students entered for Combined rather than separate Sciences
- Students strong in two disciplines and weak in the third
- Students who need a grade 5 or above for sixth-form entry
- Students deciding between Combined and Triple Science
- Private candidates covering all three disciplines alone
What you get
Outcomes we commit to
- All three disciplines covered by specialists, not one generalist
- The weakest discipline identified in week one and prioritised
- Required practicals rehearsed as examinable content
- Both awarded grades tracked separately through the course
Diagnosis first
Combined Sciences marks slip for a small number of fixable reasons
We find which one it is in the first session, then teach against it. Vague effort does not move a score; a named cause does.
One weak discipline is sinking both grades
Because the marks are pooled, a student who is strong in Biology and lost in Physics loses grades in both awards. The fix is targeted, not general.
Required practicals treated as lessons, not content
Practicals are examined directly and follow predictable question patterns. Students who did them in class but never revised them lose guaranteed marks.
The maths inside science is the real blocker
Rearranging equations, standard form and percentage change defeat more science students than the science does. It is a separate skill and needs separate teaching.
Equations are not recalled reliably
Physics in particular requires recall of specified equations. Under exam pressure, half-remembered formulas cost whole questions.
The plan
How the course actually runs
A written plan agreed before the first paid lesson, so you always know what stage the student is in.
Triage
Session 1
- Confirm route, board, tier and paper structure
- Diagnostic across all three disciplines separately
- Identify which discipline is dragging the grade
- Build the plan around that weighting
The Weak Discipline
Priority
- Concentrated teaching where the marks are being lost
- Foundations rebuilt where they are missing
- Maths-in-science skills taught explicitly
- Weekly topic tests in that discipline
All Three
Coverage
- Full specification coverage across Biology, Chemistry and Physics
- Required practicals taught and rehearsed
- Cross-discipline calculation practice
- Command words and extended answers
Papers
Final phase
- Full past papers per discipline, then combined
- Tutor-marked with an error log
- Equation and practical recall drilled
- Grade tracking across both awarded grades
How it works
From first message to first lesson
Four steps, no directory to sort through, no commitment before the demo.
Tell us about the student
Curriculum, board, current grade, target grade, and the topics actually causing trouble. Two minutes on WhatsApp is usually enough.
We match the tutor
We hand-pick one specialist for your exact specification. You are not sent a directory to sort through — the match is our job.
Free trial lesson
A real teaching session with the tutor who would teach the course. No payment, no card details, no commitment.
Lessons and weekly reports
The same tutor every week, a written plan, and a progress report to the parent so nobody is guessing whether it is working.
Questions parents ask
Combined Sciences — frequently asked questions
Combined suits students who need a solid science grade without three separate papers; Triple suits students heading for A Level Sciences. Combined does not close the door to A Level at most schools. We will give you a straight view once we have seen the diagnostic.
We assign a specialist per discipline where the weakness warrants it, and one tutor where the student needs continuity more than depth. The diagnostic decides which.
Yes, explicitly — including the variables, the method, the expected results and the question patterns that come from them.
