IB Middle Years Programme — the short version
The IB Middle Years Programme is a five-year framework for students aged roughly 11 to 16, sitting between the Primary Years Programme and the Diploma Programme. Each subject is assessed against four criteria, A to D, each marked out of 8 and reported on a 1 to 7 subject scale, so grades depend on demonstrating specific skills rather than accumulating marks. MYP Year 5 students may sit optional on-screen eAssessments leading to the MYP Certificate, and all Year 5 students complete the Personal Project. Tabish Tutors teaches MYP one-to-one online, marking work against the published criteria and preparing students for the step into the Diploma Programme.

Who this is for
Is MYP tutoring right for your student?
- MYP students whose criterion scores are inconsistent
- Year 5 students preparing for eAssessment
- Students stuck on the Personal Project
- Students moving from MYP into the Diploma Programme
- Students joining MYP from another curriculum
What you get
Outcomes we commit to
- The specific weak criterion identified and taught as a skill
- Work marked with the achievement descriptor quoted back
- A Personal Project scoped so it can actually be finished well
- An honest read on readiness for Diploma Programme HL subjects
Diagnosis first
MYP marks slip for a small number of fixable reasons
We find which one it is in the first session, then teach against it. Vague effort does not move a score; a named cause does.
One criterion is always low
MYP reports hide this in an averaged grade. Almost every stuck student has one criterion — usually B or D — that is dragging every subject down, and it is a teachable skill.
Criterion D is treated as an afterthought
Applying knowledge to unfamiliar real-world contexts is the criterion students practise least and the one that separates a 5 from a 7.
The Personal Project has no scope
Projects fail on being too ambitious far more often than too small. The process journal, not the product, is where most of the marks live.
MYP feels easy, then DP arrives
MYP's skills focus can mask thin content knowledge. Students who never notice this meet DP HL with a gap they cannot see.
The plan
How the course actually runs
A written plan agreed before the first paid lesson, so you always know what stage the student is in.
Criterion Diagnosis
Session 1
- Look at the last report criterion by criterion
- Identify which criterion is consistently weak
- Review recent marked work against the descriptors
- Set criterion-level targets, not just a grade
Skill Teaching
Core
- Teach the actual skill each criterion tests
- Model answers at each achievement band
- Subject content taught alongside the skill
- Work marked with the descriptor quoted
Project & Portfolio
Year 5
- Personal Project scoping and process journal
- ePortfolio evidence organised properly
- Reflection written to the criteria
- Deadlines mapped backward from submission
Transition
Into DP
- Bridging content into DP subject choices
- HL readiness assessed honestly
- Study habits DP will demand
- Subject selection guidance for parents
How it works
From first message to first lesson
Four steps, no directory to sort through, no commitment before the demo.
Tell us about the student
Curriculum, board, current grade, target grade, and the topics actually causing trouble. Two minutes on WhatsApp is usually enough.
We match the tutor
We hand-pick one specialist for your exact specification. You are not sent a directory to sort through — the match is our job.
Free trial lesson
A real teaching session with the tutor who would teach the course. No payment, no card details, no commitment.
Lessons and weekly reports
The same tutor every week, a written plan, and a progress report to the parent so nobody is guessing whether it is working.
Questions parents ask
MYP — frequently asked questions
Each subject group defines them slightly differently, but broadly A is knowing and understanding, B is investigating or inquiring, C is communicating, and D is applying in context or reflecting. Each is marked out of 8, and the combination converts to the 1–7 subject grade.
Yes — scoping the goal, keeping the process journal properly, structuring the report and writing reflections against the criteria. We supervise and coach; the project stays the student's own work.
It prepares the skills very well and the content less evenly, because MYP is a framework rather than a fixed syllabus. We assess content readiness honestly before DP1 so gaps are closed before they matter.
